About The Course

Delve into the world archaeology with expert tutor, Ian Hill on a 5-night archaeology course at Gartmore House.

With a mix between theoretical and practical skills, these archaeology courses might just be the head start you need for future historical expeditions.

This holiday will use Gartmore House and its grounds as a study area to provide an introduction to archaeological research, recording, and field survey. The course will provide skills training in where and how to research historical information, including maps, archaeological records, aerial photographs, and historical documents. Once you have analysed the documents, you will learn how to create a map of all identified sites and relevant records using free and readily available GIS software.

Once you have your maps completed, you will head out into the field to investigate and record the sites that you have identified, as well as learning how to read a landscape and identify any other archaeological sites in the area (what may look like innocuous lumps and bumps could actually be the remains of sites and monuments that are hundreds or thousands of years old!).

You will also learn how to ‘read’ a building, identifying and recording different architectural styles and features of Gartmore House, before heading back to base to pull together everything that you have learnt and found.
