“Finding lacemaking courses near me is really rare, that’s why I love coming to Gartmore House. It gives me a whole week dedicated to lace.”

About The Course

Lace making is wonderful skill that dates back hundreds of years and it certasinly isn’t going anywhere!

Join us at Gartmore House for a 5-night residential craft course that will allow you to take a deep dive in the inctricate world of lacemaking. Our property is nestled in amongst the lush greenery of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and offers the perfect chance to get away from the usual stresses of everyday life. You’ll be surrounded by likeminded crafty folks, making our lacemaking courses the perfect rural getaway.

Interested in trying something new but can’t find lacemaking courses near you? We have the answer with these 5-night craft holidays!

Our lacemaking tutor, Jean Leader, has experience in a wide range of lacemaking techniques. Her personal favourite is bobbin lace, in particular Bedfordshire, Bucks Point and Torchon. In addition to these she teaches other bobbin laces including Honiton, Bruges, and Milanese, together with needlelace and tatting. Jean is also an expert in lace identification and the history of lace, for those interested in a deeper understanding of the topic.

Whether you have been making lace for a matter of months, for several years, or are a complete beginner you will receive personal tuition tailored to your particular experience and wishes.

Jean will contact you beforehand to find out what lace you have already made and what you hope to achieve. Together we will then draw up an individual programme for your week at Gartmore House.

Your Course Tutor: Jean Leader

Your tutor is Jean Leader, who is based in Glasgow, Scotland. Lace has been an integral part of Jean’s life for over thirty years. Jean has always been interested in textiles - knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing and later, weaving and spinning. One day stumbled upon a book about bobbin lacemaking, so decided to try that too!

Jean not only makes lace, she also designs, teaches and writes books (and has even created an iPhone app) on the subject. She has also served on the committees of national and international lace organizations. In recognition of her work for lace and lacemaking Jean received the 2015 Marsh Heritage Crafts Volunteer Award.
