Each holiday will be loosely themed as follows:
Theresa will bring a selection of pictures which mix things up in different ways. She will talk a little about how they are made and the reasons for her choices. She will bring along some materials for the group to test. You will then have the opportunity to chat about your ideas and the types of techniques you might like to try.

Start small.
Theresa will have a look at the images you have brought with you and discuss with the group the kind of things you could try to stimulate ideas. She will then do a quick demo of some relevant techniques to get things started.
You can start on a small image or a series of small images, trying out techniques and asking about other possibilities.
Talk about next days activities.

On Tuesday it’s time to move into bigger and more ambitious images. You will continue with the techniques you learned the day before, learn some new ones, and experiment with the techniques you have enjoyed the most.

Wednesday and Thursday
By this point, most people will be working in different ways and at different stages so Theresa will spend time with individuals giving advice and making suggestions on how to develop their work. She will demonstrate and teach individually and as a group where appropriate.

Take work home and perhaps do some swaps with each other.

Check in is from 4pm where you will receive a warm welcome from our team.
Once you are unpacked and settled, we invite you to enjoy some tea or coffee and home baking in the lounge where you can relax after your journey.
If you have never been on a holiday like this before, we understand how anxious you may be. That’s why, come 6pm, everyone will gather in the lounge for the Welcome Talk and Meet & Greet, giving you the chance to meet both your fellow guests and your tutor before the start of the course on Monday. Your tutor will talk you through what to expect from the week, discuss what you would like to achieve during your stay, and answer any questions you may have.
From there, dinner is served at 6:30pm in the downstairs dining room.

Monday to Thursday
Throughout the week, tuition runs from 10am to 4pm with regular breaks for tea and coffee so you can relax and have a natter with your fellow guests about everything you’ve been up to so far.
All your meals are served in the dining room.
Evening tea and coffee is available in the lounge at 9pm.

Tutor Theresa Gourlay

Theresa studied Drawing and Painting at DJCA, Dundee 1977 -1982 and taught Art and Design in schools from 1987 until 2018.

Since retiring from teaching in 2018, she has returned to making art full time. She did in her first Open Studios, May 2019 adn took part in a group exhibition “Getting Lost” at the Off the Rails Arthouse, Ladybank, August 2019. She also had work in the Meffan Christmas exhibition in Forfar 2019 and in the “Self” exhibition in Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh 3rd – 9th March 2020.

Theresa creates portraits from life of people close to her, as well as from photographs, memory and imagination. She paints landscapes from sketches and photographs – mostly of places close to her home in Fife but will also take inspiration from the places she has visited on holiday. Mixed Media is also one of Theresa’s passions and she loves to work with many different media – coloured pencil, biro, charcoal, pastel, oils and acrylic, mixing media, making lovely messes and finding lovely, unexpected ways of creating mood and liveliness. She enjoys the whole process of printmaking; calculating how to translate an imaging into layers, cutting the block, printing, cutting, printing and all the experimenting along the way. Teaching brings Theresa a great deal of joy and she regularly teaches adult classes in and Fife.

Theresa’s many years of experience as an art teacher, as well as an accomplished artist, shows through as she is able to adapt her approach to suit individual learning styles. She allows her students to develop their own style at their own pace while regularly introducing them to new techniques. She is organised, welcoming, encouraging and enthusiastic with a true passion for her work. – Jane Robertson
