Our printmaking holidays will be loosely themed as follows:

Sunday
Theresa will bring a selection of prints and some of the images used to inspire them for everyone to look at on Sunday evening.

Monday
Introduction to relief printing using polystyrene blocks.
Theresa will do a quick demo to demonstrates how printing works.
Then the fun begins! It’s time for you to turn your hand printing. You can either use your own image or one provided to draw up a block and make a few test prints. Then clean and draw on block again. Once you’ve got a feel for it, try your prints in a second colour.
At this point you can print more colours, start another block or work on an idea for your next print.

Tuesday
Introduction to lino cutting.
The concept of lino cutting is very similar to the techniques used with the polystyrene block but it takes a little longer.
Perfect your image before you start cutting the lino.
Print first colour.

Wednesday
Now that you’ve master cutting your lino for one colour, you’ll learn how to cut for a second colour.
Experiment with colour combinations to create striking prints.

Thursday
Finishing off prints.
If time remains, then you will have the opportunity to try mono printing.

Friday
Take prints home in folder. This is also the perfect chance to do some swaps with your coursemates!

Sunday
Check in is from 4pm where you will receive a warm welcome from our team.
Once you are unpacked and settled, we invite you to enjoy some tea or coffee and home baking in the lounge where you can relax after your journey.
If you have never been on a holiday like this before, we understand how anxious you may be. That’s why, come 6pm, everyone will gather in the lounge for the Welcome Talk and Meet & Greet, giving you the chance to meet both your fellow guests and your tutor before the start of the course on Monday. Your tutor will talk you through what to expect from the week, discuss what you would like to achieve during your stay, and answer any questions you may have.
From there, dinner is served at 6:30pm in the downstairs dining room.

Monday to Thursday
Throughout the week, tuition runs from 10am to 4pm with regular breaks for tea and coffee so you can relax and have a natter with your fellow guests about everything you’ve been up to so far.
All your meals are served in the dining room.
Evening tea and coffee is available in the lounge at 9pm.

Friday
Check out by 10am

What’s Included

  • 4 days of specialist tuition from Theresa Gourlay
  • Some materials required for the course
  • Full board catering
  • 5-nights accommodation
  • Complimentary transfers from Stirling train station are available on the arrival and departure days (pick-up from the station at 15:30, departs Gartmore House at 10:00). Transfers from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airports are available at an additional cost.

We kindly ask all guests to bring the following:

  • Pencils.
  • Paper for drawing out ideas and planning colours. A4 sketch is fine – it does not have to be great quality. You can also bring different colours and types of paper to print on. Patterned wrapping paper or even brown is nice to try.
  • Bring any images that you might use to make a print. They can be sketches, cut from magazines or newspapers, printed from the internet or an old greetings card for example.

We advise guests to bring an apron/wear old clothes in the knowledge that they may get messy. We also recommend bringing an old rag, towel or similar to clean your hands as you work.

Tutor Theresa Gourlay

Theresa studied Drawing and Painting at DJCA, Dundee before going on to have a career as an Art and Design teacher. Since retiring from teaching in 2018, she has returned to making art full time. She did in her first Open Studios in May 2019 and took part in a group exhibition “Getting Lost” at the Off the Rails Arthouse, Ladybank, in August 2019. She also had work in the Meffan Christmas exhibition in Forfar and in the “Self” exhibition in Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh.

Theresa creates portraits from life of people close to her, as well as from photographs, memory and imagination. She paints landscapes from sketches and photographs – mostly of places close to her home in Fife but will also take inspiration from the places she has visited on holiday. Mixed Media is also one of Theresa’s passions and she loves to work with many different media – coloured pencil, biro, charcoal, pastel, oils and acrylic, mixing media, making lovely messes and finding lovely, unexpected ways of creating mood and liveliness. She enjoys the whole process of printmaking; calculating how to translate an imaging into layers, cutting the block, printing, cutting, printing and all the experimenting along the way. Teaching brings Theresa a great deal of joy and she regularly teaches adult classes in and around Fife.

”Theresa immediately put me at ease and took a flexible approach to the class where experience and ability was wide ranging. Over a few blocks, I developed my abilities and gained confidence in the relaxed environment Theresa had created.”

”I attend Theresa’s Relief Printing workshop where she introduced us to a variety of materials and techniques. I thoroughly enjoyed this and went home with several finished prints. Since then, I have done some lino printing at home!”

Please note: The above reviews come from past workshops and courses run by the tutor out with Gartmore House.
