“I couldn’t find braiding lessons near me at all until I found Gartmore House. I can’t wait to be back!”

If you’ve been on the hunt for braiding lessons near you so that you can add those finishing trims to all your makes or add pretty ties to your purses, then let Gartmore House show you how.

We’re bringing you 5-night residential braiding courses so that you can get into the nitty gritty of all things braiding. Bringing your hobby on holiday has never been easier.

Learn a new craft during our braiding lessons with individual tuition and plenty of time to make new friends!

Braids and bands are narrow textiles made by linking together a few strands of yarn. This method has been used for hundreds of years for ties and trims on clothing and household items.

Your tutor Jean Leader will teach you some of the different ways of making braids, and how to use them to make bracelets. Threads will be provided, although you may want to bring your own if you have a particular colour scheme in mind.

Sunday
Check in is from 4pm where you will receive a warm welcome from our team.
Once you are unpacked and settled, we invite you to enjoy some tea or coffee and home baking in the lounge where you can relax after your journey.
If you have never been on a holiday like this before, we understand how anxious you may be. That’s why, come 6pm, everyone will gather in the lounge for the Welcome Talk and Meet & Greet, giving you the chance to meet both your fellow guests and your tutor before the start of the course on Monday. Your tutor will talk you through what to expect from the week, discuss what you would like to achieve during your stay, and answer any questions you may have.
From there, dinner is served at 6:30pm in the downstairs dining room.

Throughout the week, tuition runs from 10am to 4pm with regular breaks for tea and coffee so you can relax and have a natter with your fellow guests about everything you’ve been up to so far.
All your meals are served in the dining room.

Tutor Jean Leader

Your tutor Jean Leader is based in Glasgow. Jean has always been interested in textiles – knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing and, later, weaving and spinning – and one day stumbled upon a book about bobbin lacemaking, so decided to try that too! Making, designing, teaching and writing books on the subject of lace has since formed an integral part of Jean’s life for over thirty years. In recognition of her work for lace and lacemaking Jean received the 2015 Marsh Heritage Crafts Volunteer Award. Having previously served as chairman of The Lace Guild, Jean is the current President of the International Organization of Lace.

Jean is also the tutor for our Lace Making courses.
