About The Course
If those plot bunnies are running rampant, your characters won’t behave, or you can’t get your plot straight, then our creative writing course might just be for you.
These creative writing courses are suitable for anyone who really needs the time and space to write, whether you’re an experienced writer or a beginner looking for guidance. In the calm surroundings of Gartmore House and all our cosy writing nooks, you won’t fail to be inspired.

With nearly twenty years of supporting writers, our tutor Laura specialises in facilitating relaxed, fun and engaging workshops for writers from all backgrounds and experiences.
You’ll learn about different aspects of writing and will have the opportunity to share your work and receive feedback. Each day you’ll have time to write independently at your own leisure, with Laura on hand to answer any questions and help you focus.
We will cover a number of topics over each week. Laura will tailor these to suit your experience and interests. You are very welcome to bring your own project as the focus of your writing for the week, or come ready to spark off completely new ideas.
Our writing holidays will boost your confidence and support you in finding the best way to establish a regular writing practice. You’ll learn how to defeat procrastination and through lively, light-hearted writing sessions, you’ll find yourself achieving more than you ever expected you could!
You’ll have the opportunity to receive one-to-one coaching with Laura while you’re here and will receive signed copies of Laura’s books Wellspring and Magpie Mind: Live an Inspired Life.

Full board catering and 5-nights accommodation are included when you book.
Complimentary transfers are included when you book - subject to certain conditions.*
* Transfers from Stirling train station are available on the arrival and departure days (pick-up from the station at 15:30, departs Gartmore House at 10:00). Transfers from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airports are available at an additional cost.

All of our craft or activity holidays run for 5-nights from Sunday to Friday and start from £979 per person.
The above is based on single occupancy. A £100 per person discount is applied for art, craft and activity guests on a shared occupancy basis.

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF BOOKING
To confirm your holiday:
A non-refundable 25% deposit is required to secure your booking.
Payment of your holiday:
The balance of your payment must be received no later than 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement of your holiday. In the case of non-payment, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and any cancellation fees will apply.
If you cancel your booking:
All deposits are non-refundable. Should you need to cancel your booking up to 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement date, we will refund any monies paid, less your deposit. If you cancel less than 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement date, no refund will be given.
We do advise you to take out holiday insurance for this reason.
Laura will tailor the workshops to your needs and interests in order to ignite your imagination and empower you to reach your writing potential. You’ll find yourself experimenting with aspects of writing you’ve never tried before. You will have the chance to contact Laura ahead of your retreat to make any requests.
A Novel Writing Experience – Sunday 16th to Friday 21st January 2022, and Sunday 17th to Friday 22nd July 2022
Over the course of the week, Laura will guide you through your own Hero’s Journey. You are welcome to bring a novel that’s already in progress, or come ready to begin afresh. Topics we will cover include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Idea generation – bring a novel idea with you or come up with one on the retreat.
- Publishing: explore different routes to publication
- Planner or Pantser – to outline or not?
- Opening and closing scenes – start with a pow and end with a wow.
- Show, Don’t Tell – evoking your characters and settings
- Narration: 1st, 2nd or 3rd person
New Horizons – Sunday 1st to Friday 6th May 2022
Laura will take you on new adventures. You’ll head out after new horizons with a series of fun, relaxed workshops.If you’re feeling a dearth of creative energy, or you’re just not sure where to begin, join us on this retreat to revitalise your writing with an injection of fresh energy. This course works well both as an introduction to creative writing, and as a rejuvenator for writers in a rut.The week will provide a balance of activities designed to:
- Identify your writing blocks
- Explore strategies to overcome them
- Defeat procrastination
- Boost imagination
- Inspire your writing
- Widen your experience
Check in is from 4pm where you will receive a warm welcome from our team.
Once you are unpacked and settled, we invite you to enjoy some tea or coffee and home baking in the lounge where you can relax after your journey.
If you have never been on a holiday like this before, we understand how anxious you may be. That’s why, come 6pm, everyone will gather in the lounge for the Welcome Talk and Meet & Greet, giving you the chance to meet both your fellow guests and your tutor before the start of the course on Monday. Your tutor will talk you through what to expect from the week, discuss what you would like to achieve during your stay, and answer any questions you may have.
From there, dinner is served at 6:30pm in the downstairs dining room.
Monday to Thursday
Throughout the week, tuition runs from 10am to 4pm with regular breaks for tea and coffee so you can relax and have a natter with your fellow guests about everything you’ve been up to so far.
All your meals are served in the dining room.
Evening tea and coffee is available in the lounge at 9pm.

We ask all participants to please bring a laptop/tablet for use throughout the week.
All attendees of the creative writing courses will receive a notebook and writing implements. You will also receive a copy of Laura’s books: Wellspring, and Magpie Mind: Live an Inspired Life. You are most welcome to bring along your favourite pens, pencils and notebooks if desired.

Afternoon procrastination and inspiration workshop
What worked for me today were the spurts of creative writing interspersed with nuggets and tips on building good writing habits. Laura creates a very warm and relaxed environment which is a very important part of the creative process. Thank you!

Your Course Tutor: Laura Fyfe
Laura T Fyfe is an award-winning writer with short stories, non-fiction and poetry published in literary magazines internationally, including Northwords Now and Butcher’s Dog. Laura has nearly twenty years experience in motivating writers, as well as a M.Ed in Educational Enquiry and an M.Litt in Creative Writing under her belt.
She travels Scotland to facilitate writing workshops and adjudicate writing competitions and is a prominent voice in Scotland’s writing community, serving on the board of the Scottish Writers’ Centre and the Scottish Poetry Library. Laura publishes books under her imprint, Figment Books and has published a book as an app as well, ChildsPlay app. She predominantly writes poetry and novels and loves experimenting with new ideas and techniques. Laura is an expert in boosting writers’ confidence, as reflected in her books and audiobooks Wellspring and Magpie Mind which focus on defeating procrastination and increasing creativity.

What do I need to bring on my art, craft and activity break?
Your required kit list for your specific break is shown on each course’s webpage. However, should you have any queries, then please feel free to contact us.
What is the art, craft and activity holiday booking terms and conditions?
To secure your booking, a non-refundable £100 per person deposit is required. Full payment is due 6 weeks prior to arrival. For holidays booked within 6 weeks of the arrival date, full payment is required at time of booking.
Holidays are subject to availability and subject to change. There is a minimum number of guests required to run each course. If a course is cancelled due to low numbers, you may transfer any monies paid to an alternative date or a full refund will be issued.
If you cancel a booking, your £100 deposit is non-refundable. The rest of your payment will be refunded if you cancel no later than 6 weeks prior to arrival.
What time do your transfer services for the art, craft & activity holidays operate?
We offer a complimentary transfer services to and from Stirling train station. Collection is at 3:30pm from the station on the day of arrival, and our drop-off service departs from Gartmore House at 9:15am (5 and 6-night holidays) or 4pm (2-night holidays) on the day of departure.
The closest airports to us are Glasgow and Edinburgh airports. If you require a transfer to and/or from either airport, please select this option at the time of booking. Transfers to/from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are available at an additional cost. After booking your flights, please update your Customer Portal with the time you wish to be collected from the airport on the day of arrival and the time of collection at Gartmore House, returning to the airport, on the day of departure. Please allow 60 minutes for your transfer between Gartmore House and Glasgow Airport, or 90 minutes for your transfer between Gartmore House and Edinburgh Airport.
Can I bring a partner/friend to stay with me while I am on an art, craft or activity break?
If you’re coming on one of our art, craft or activity holidays and would like to bring a friend, partner, or member of your family, then we have you (and them!) covered. Accompanying guests will enjoy full board catering and shared accommodation with you. Please add them at the checkout stage.
Are the bedrooms en-suite?
We have 23 en-suite bedrooms, comprising a mix of single, twin, double and family rooms, located on the first and second floor of the house. There are also three further bedrooms which share a bathroom. All guests are allocated an en-suite room unless you request otherwise.
Do you have accessible bedrooms?
We have one dedicated accessible bedroom. This bedroom benefits from an en-suite bathroom with assistance rails, grab bars and a ‘roll-in’ shower. Additionally, we have a number of other bedrooms that have a shower cubicle which may fit your needs. All other bedrooms feature a bath with an overhead shower. All floors of the house are accessible by lift.
What facilities are there in the bedrooms?
All bedrooms have tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer, bath towels and complimentary travel toiletries. Whilst there are no TVs in the bedrooms there is a TV in the Oak Room.
Do all the bedrooms have a good view?
The more spacious, Hobby Haven bedrooms have panoramic views looking across Flander’s Moss towards Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. All other bedrooms have a side or rear view of our grounds.
What time is check in/check out?
Check-in is from 4pm, and check-out is 10am.
There will always be somebody on duty to check you in, whether it is the receptionist or the night porter. If you are going to be very late, we would appreciate you letting us know in advance where possible.
Is there WiFi?
Complimentary fibre internet is available for all guests and is accessible in our public areas on the ground floor and library on the lower ground floor. There is no WiFi access in the bedrooms.

Do you have car parking facilities?
Free on-site parking is available for all guests throughout the duration of your stay. All cars are parked at owners’ risk.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
We are able to cater for a wide range of dietaries and allergens. Please notify us of any requirements at the time of booking.
Can I stay at Gartmore House on a bed and breakfast basis?
Whilst our calendar is filled with art, craft and activity holidays we do occassionally have gaps which we open to bed & breakfast guests.
We welcome solo travellers, couples and friends to stay at Gartmore House on a B&B basis. Full payment is required at the time of a B&B booking. Direct bookings have a 72-hour cancellation policy.

What should I do if I have lost or left something in my room?
Send us an email or call if you think you have left something in your room, and we will do our best to find it and return it to you. However, we ask you to please reimburse us for the postage fee.
Can I bring my dog?
We are a dog friendly house. Dogs are not permitted in the public or dining areas and must be kept in your bedroom. Whilst in the ground of Gartmore Estate, all dogs must be kept on a lead. We charge a fee of £30 per dog. This fee does not apply to guide dogs or assistance dogs.
Where is the nearest shop?
Gartmore village has a small community owned shop that is a 10-minute walk away. For a bigger supermarket, there is a Co-operative in the village of Aberfoyle, situated two miles from Gartmore House.
I am under 18 years old; can I stay at Gartmore House without a parent/guardian?
No, if you are under the age of 18 you will require a parent or guardian to accompany you.
