About The Course

Our tapestry weaving classes are suitable for beginners and developing weavers. Learn the basic techniques of woven tapestry, before going on to experiment with colour and textures in tapestry weave.

Over the course of four days, you will learn how to set up a small frame loom, consider the variety of materials and warp settings required for different designs, control the weaving tension, create shapes, angles, lines, and texture in the weave. As we begin to explore the process of woven tapestry, you will learn how to mix and blend colored yarns.

Expert tutor Fiona Hutchison has many years of teaching and artistic experience under her belt, and with her guidance, this tapestry weaving class will give you the confidence you need to bring your vision to life. As part of your tapestry weaving class, you will be encouraged to develop your own ideas and designs for weaving. Learning how to keep a visual diary or sketchbook, we will consider a range of approaches to help you develop your own personal creative language.

This tapestry weaving course will cover:

  • Warping a simple frame loom.
  • Selecting the correct warp/weft thicknesses.
  • Basic tapestry techniques: creating shapes, angles, lines.
  • Using multiple yarn bundles to blend and mix colors.
  • Developing design ideas and keeping a sketchbook.
  • Finishing and presenting your tapestry.

Students will work individually, at their own pace, and will be supported with class demonstrations and group discussions. By the end of the workshop, you will have the confidence to work independently to develop your personal weaving style.

More Reviews...

This course was absolutely fantastic in giving you a very in depth introduction to upholstery and French polishing. The class was very small so everyone got time and attention to create beautiful pieces and everything was provided and all I had to take along was a piece of chosen fabric – this really took the pressure off getting organised for the course.

We live in a busy, demanding world and at some point, we need to step back and give ourselves time to embrace our own needs. Crafts, no matter what form they take, allows us the time to do just that; work with our hands, take time to think at a slower pace & make peace with the world around us.

Crafting Workshops allow time to appreciate a traditional experience alongside learning new skills. This, together with the opportunity to add your own more personal detailed embellishments is a great opportunity to embrace the pleasure in Glass Crafting!

Your Course Tutor: Catriona MacGeoch

After a career in scientific research, Catriona decided to indulge her passion for fabrics and textiles, especially Harris Tweed, by setting up her own soft furnishing and upholstery business Sula in 2006. This was initially in her garden workshop but very quickly expanded to a retail shop and workshop in rural Perthshire.

Sula specialised in designing and producing a quality range of soft furnishings including curtains, blinds, cushions, footstools and various home accessories.

In 2018 Sula was awarded Scotland’s Soft Furnishing Supplier of the Year Award.

Catriona says she is so proud to have helped many clients over the years fulfil their vision by designing and transforming their home interiors – from shepherd huts to full castle restoration projects.

Catriona has also been a tutor running leisure courses in upholstery, curtain and blind making for many years. She now loves passing on her soft furnishing skills and teaching new learners in a relaxed atmosphere.

About The Course

Throughout the 4 days we will look at some different types of printmaking, experiment with colour combinations and create our own unique striking prints.

Printmaking terminology will be broken down into easy to understand language.  The most important thing is to be open to have fun and expect the unexpected.  You can get some amazing surprises with printmaking.

Catherine will be on hand to give demonstrations throughout the course both as a group and also 1-1.  We will start with mono-printing moving onto Lino cutting (a type of relief printing). Your Lino print may be a one colour print or for those more advanced the opportunity to try jigsaw lino or reduction lino will be an option.

We will also try our hand at Intaglio printing using specific household materials, this involves the use of a specialist press which Catherine will bring for us to use.

You will take your various prints home in folder. This is also the perfect chance to do some swaps with your fellow students!

Catherine will bring a wide selection of images and prints to look through on Sunday evening that will inspire you for the week ahead.  Catherines own prints have been shown internationally and she uses different types of printmaking in her own practice, loving each style for its special qualities.

Do come with some images/sketches for you to use as your reference for your prints

About The Course

This is exactly what we love to hear from guests who have taken part in our photography courses.

Here at Gartmore House, we offer a unique kind of learning experience: to bring your hobby on holiday! Over the course of your time with us, you’ll explore the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park to find the very best subjects to capture and keep forever. Is there anything more inspiring to the creative eye than Scottish countryside? We don’t think so, but then again, we might be a bit biased! Our photography courses are designed to build on your skills day by day and by the end of the holiday, we’re sure that you’ll be much more confident in your camera skills.

Brush up on your skills and learn new ones during our photography courses – all while surrounded by the beautiful Scottish countryside!
Under the watchful eye of Edinburgh based photographer Ewan Barry, improve your photography skills and learn new techniques. Explore our 18th century quaint and quirky home, with beautiful period features or venture offsite in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

You’ll learn about the following topics:

Theory and approach to photography
Identifying potential subjects
Creative composition
Understanding light
Mastering camera controls
Image processing and finishing
You could focus on the following, dependent on the weather and interests of the group: Gartmore House landscapes, architectural and natural details, image processing; landscapes and water movement; still life, studio and interior work. During the holiday students will review, discuss and give feedback on their photographs.

The photographs you will take will be specific to Gartmore and the surrounding area, however the approach and techniques learned are transferable.

The staff – every one of them is so friendly and interested in what is being created and how we are progressing, which is great. Thank you for another great weekend and we will be back!

Your Course Tutor: Brigid Collins

Brigid is an artist and educator whose practice is deeply rooted in close and loving observation of the natural world. She makes paintings and drawings inspired by poetry as well as working in three-dimensions and with the form of the book and is most often drawn to the tactility and sensuousness of materials such as pastels, watercolour, porcelain, tissue, wire and wax, encapsulating fragility and strength in equal measure. She has collaborated and published books with poets and authors Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie and Kirsty Gunn and, most recently, also with Christine De Luca, while spending a year as Artist in Residence at Dr. Neil’s Garden in Duddingston, Edinburgh where she recently exhibited at Playfair’s wonderful Thomson’s Tower, set deep in the garden and on the shores of the loch.

Having just spent such a very happy and healing time working almost exclusively outdoors, Brigid is currently focussing on developing new work. She hopes to begin to find ways to build on this practice of working ‘en plein air’, while at the same time enjoying time being back in the studio, which really is an extension of herself and a place to create in a different way, akin to inhabiting one of her favourite poems…

Kit Neufeld

Kit is a graduate of the Scottish College of Textiles specialising in knitted fabrics, and throughout her time there, she found that the use of fine art skills such as drawing and painting were vital when searching for inspiration to create. Throughout the week, Kit will assist you in the process of honing and expanding your skill set as you work towards a personal goal with the hope that when you leave you will have gained the confidence in your own drawing skill.

Using a variety of materials and techniques, Kit will guide you as you study different subjects each day allowing for a productive but enjoyable experience.

This course is suitable for all levels, whether a complete beginner ready to start something new or a skilled artist looking for new challenge.

Nigel Overton

Since studying Drawing, Painting & Printmaking at Loughborough College of Art & Design Nigel has worked with a wide range of different media but in recent years has mainly worked in acrylics.

Whatever the medium, he has always maintained his belief in the importance of drawing, both in his own work and while teaching. Nigel has been fascinated with landscapes and seascapes since his early years as an art student. Drawing and painting continue to provide him with the visual means of expressing his personal and emotional response to an ever-changing subject.

Formerly Head of Art & Design at Benton Park School in Leeds, Nigel now paints professionally and teaches day and residential classes. Nigel has work in private collections in America, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Netherlands and Australia. You can find out more about Nigel’s work by visiting the website Overton Fine Arts.

Catherine Sargeant

Catherine Sargeant is a visual artist and educator based in Scotland.  Both her own artwork and art teaching incorporate different media including paint, inks, print and collage.  With over a decade of experience teaching on art holidays she says “Teaching mixed ability groups is exciting, I strive to meet everyone at their own level, encouraging folk to explore their creativity and also to have fun..” Catherine works from her Edinburgh, Patriothall WASPS studio, initially awarded to her on Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art during its Centenary year.  Catherine tutors at Leith School of Art and freelance both in Scotland and abroad.
