About The Course
Do you have old pieces of furniture you want to spruce up? Are they mismatched or can you just not bear to part with them?
Then join Gartmore House for a 5-night residential upcycling furniture course! This is a fun and creative learning experience all about bringing new life to tired furniture and making it lovable again. You’re guaranteed to be amazed at what you’ll learn to do with a lick of paint. It feels really good, but be warned, it’s addictive!
You don’t have to worry about a thing during our upcycling furniture course, we have the very best tutor to teach you everything you need to know.
You’ll be expertly guided through the process of furniture upcycling. From choosing suitable second hand furniture, designing your piece, repairing and preparing your furniture for painting, to learning about the different types of paints you can use including mixing your own chalk paint, practicing decorative techniques, refining your brushwork skills and protecting your work! You’ll learn the techniques required to achieve a clean, flat finish for your furniture, including graduated colour. We will explore how to distress furniture for a shabby chic antique look, including paint layering, dry brushing, splattering, using broken colour, washon/wash-off, rubbing back, wax resists and crackle effect. For a funky or retro look, you’ll be shown how to use masking tape to create sharp linear designs. For added embellishment, you’ll practice using stencils, how to decoupage with napkins, maps and paper, where to use gilding wax or you may wish to try some hand painting. Finally you’ll learn how to finish and protect your furniture with a soft furniture wax or a varnish.
By the end of this upcycling furniture course you’ll leave with your finished piece, a couple of pieces of wall art and fully equipped with all the skills and knowledge needed to confidently use paints and waxes on your own.

* Transfers from Stirling train station are available on the arrival and departure days (pick-up from the station at 15:30, departs Gartmore House at 10:00). Transfers from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airports are available at an additional cost.

All of our craft or activity holidays run for 5-nights from Sunday to Friday and start from £979 per person.

Accompanying guests will enjoy full board catering and shared accommodation with you. We also have a full programme of day trips and activities on offer for them. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF BOOKING
To confirm your holiday:
A non-refundable 25% deposit is required to secure your booking.
Payment of your holiday:
The balance of your payment must be received no later than 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement of your holiday. In the case of non-payment, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and any cancellation fees will apply.
If you cancel your booking:
All deposits are non-refundable. Should you need to cancel your booking up to 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement date, we will refund any monies paid, less your deposit. If you cancel less than 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement date, no refund will be given.
We do advise you to take out holiday insurance for this reason.
Each holiday will be lossely themed as follows
Meet and greet
We will work on 2 pieces of upcycled wall art to practice decoupage and stencilling. This will introduce you to antiquing, wax guilding, crackle glaze and varnishes.
Sourcing second hand furniture and how to spot an appropriate piece for upcycling. Start work on your furniture, checking for damage, repairing and preparing for painting. You will then design your pieces and plan the process. Start painting and practice brush skills.
Continue working on your furniture. Design plans often change as your piece evolves.
Adding decorative details and protecting your work with varnish/wax. Celebrate your amazing work.
Check in is from 4pm where you will receive a warm welcome from our team.
Once you are unpacked and settled, we invite you to enjoy some tea or coffee and home baking in the lounge where you can relax after your journey.
If you have never been on a holiday like this before, we understand how anxious you may be. That’s why, come 6pm, everyone will gather in the lounge for the Welcome Talk and Meet & Greet, giving you the chance to meet both your fellow guests and your tutor before the start of the course on Monday. Your tutor will talk you through what to expect from the week, discuss what you would like to achieve during your stay, and answer any questions you may have.
From there, dinner is served at 6:30pm in the downstairs dining room.
Monday to Thursday
Throughout the week, tuition runs from 10am to 4pm with regular breaks for tea and coffee so you can relax and have a natter with your fellow guests about everything you’ve been up to so far.
All your meals are served in the dining room.
Evening tea and coffee is available in the lounge at 9pm.

You’ll have access to all required tools and equipment, including resource books, paints, brushes, waxes, stencils, decoupage materials and varnishes.
We kindly ask all participant to bring the following:
- Please wear an apron/old clothes in the knowledge that they may get covered in paint!
- Two small pieces of wooden furniture with you. e.g. a nest of tables, an occasional table, a side table, magazine rack, a trunk, box, cabinet, a bedside table, coffee table, magazine rack, 1-2 dining chairs, a stool, or a small cabinet. These can be sourced for you, on request from the tutor in advance, for an additional charge of £15 per piece. Anything personal you would like to incorporate. eg. handles, pictures, paper, wall paper, transfers/decals
- A small to medium sized picture/mirror with a flat, wide frame for decoupage/stencilling. If you do not have a frame, your tutor will supply a frame or wood offcuts.
Your tutor, Rose Hall, will be in touch before the start of the course to make sure you come fully prepared.

Your Course Tutor: Rose Hall
Rose Hall is an artist, professional upcycler, entrepreneur and an enthusiastic facilitator. She trained at The Hampstead School of Decorative Art in Victorian & contemporary paint techniques, including marbling, wood graining, stencilling and broken colour effects.
She worked as a commercial decorative artist for over 10 years in Edinburgh, before her passion and concern for the environment brought her to co-found a not-for-profit, Upcycled World, where she taught upcycling and reuse skills to the local community. Currently she is CEO of a charity, EcoArt, that unites creativity and sustainability to raise awareness of environmental issues.
“Throughout, upcycling furniture has been a constant”. Rose explains, “Upcycling has always been a part of my life. Initially from necessity; poverty is a great creative driver, where at home, painting brought cohesion to mismatched gifted furniture and later to studies, employment and teaching furniture decorative techniques. It brings me great joy to engage with the creative journey, mine and others”.

What do I need to bring on my art, craft and activity break?
Your required kit list for your specific break is shown on each course’s webpage. However, should you have any queries, then please feel free to contact us.
What is the art, craft and activity holiday booking terms and conditions?
To secure your booking, a non-refundable £100 per person deposit is required. Full payment is due 6 weeks prior to arrival. For holidays booked within 6 weeks of the arrival date, full payment is required at time of booking.
Holidays are subject to availability and subject to change. There is a minimum number of guests required to run each course. If a course is cancelled due to low numbers, you may transfer any monies paid to an alternative date or a full refund will be issued.
If you cancel a booking, your £100 deposit is non-refundable. The rest of your payment will be refunded if you cancel no later than 6 weeks prior to arrival.
What time do your transfer services for the art, craft & activity holidays operate?
We offer a complimentary transfer services to and from Stirling train station. Collection is at 3:30pm from the station on the day of arrival, and our drop-off service departs from Gartmore House at 10am (5 and 6-night holidays) or 4pm (2-night holidays) on the day of departure.
The closest airports to us are Glasgow and Edinburgh airports. If you require a transfer to and/or from either airport, please select this option at the time of booking. Transfers to/from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are available at an additional cost. After booking your flights, please update your Customer Portal with the time you wish to be collected from the airport on the day of arrival and the time of collection at Gartmore House, returning to the airport, on the day of departure. Please allow 60 minutes for your transfer between Gartmore House and Glasgow Airport, or 90 minutes for your transfer between Gartmore House and Edinburgh Airport.
Can I bring a partner/friend to stay with me while I am on an art, craft or activity break?
If you’re coming on one of our art, craft or activity holidays and would like to bring a friend, partner, or member of your family, then we have you (and them!) covered. Accompanying guests will enjoy full board catering and shared accommodation with you. Please add them at the checkout stage.
Are the bedrooms en-suite?
We have 23 en-suite bedrooms, comprising a mix of single, twin, double and family rooms, located on the first and second floor of the house. There are also three further bedrooms which share a bathroom. All guests are allocated an en-suite room unless you request otherwise.
Do you have accessible bedrooms?
We have one dedicated accessible bedroom. This bedroom benefits from an en-suite bathroom with assistance rails, grab bars and a ‘roll-in’ shower. Additionally, we have a number of other bedrooms that have a shower cubicle which may fit your needs. All other bedrooms feature a bath with an overhead shower. All floors of the house are accessible by lift.
What facilities are there in the bedrooms?
All bedrooms have tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer, bath towels and complimentary travel toiletries. Whilst there are no TVs in the bedrooms there is a TV in the Oak Room.
Do all the bedrooms have a good view?
The more spacious, Hobby Haven bedrooms have panoramic views looking across Flander’s Moss towards Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. All other bedrooms have a side or rear view of our grounds.
What time is check in/check out?
Check-in is from 4pm, and check-out is 10am.
There will always be somebody on duty to check you in, whether it is the receptionist or the night porter. If you are going to be very late, we would appreciate you letting us know in advance where possible.
Is there WiFi?
Complimentary fibre internet is available for all guests and is accessible in our public areas on the ground floor and library on the lower ground floor. There is no WiFi access in the bedrooms.

Do you have car parking facilities?
Free on-site parking is available for all guests throughout the duration of your stay. All cars are parked at owners’ risk.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
We are able to cater for a wide range of dietaries and allergens. Please notify us of any requirements at the time of booking.
Can I stay at Gartmore House on a bed and breakfast basis?
Whilst our calendar is filled with art, craft and activity holidays we do occassionally have gaps which we open to bed & breakfast guests.
We welcome solo travellers, couples and friends to stay at Gartmore House on a B&B basis. Full payment is required at the time of a B&B booking. Direct bookings have a 72-hour cancellation policy.

What should I do if I have lost or left something in my room?
Send us an email or call if you think you have left something in your room, and we will do our best to find it and return it to you. However, we ask you to please reimburse us for the postage fee.
Can I bring my dog?
We are a dog friendly house. Dogs are not permitted in the public or dining areas and must be kept in your bedroom. Whilst in the ground of Gartmore Estate, all dogs must be kept on a lead. We charge a fee of £30 per dog. This fee does not apply to guide dogs or assistance dogs.
Where is the nearest shop?
Gartmore village has a small community owned shop that is a 10-minute walk away. For a bigger supermarket, there is a Co-operative in the village of Aberfoyle, situated two miles from Gartmore House.
I am under 18 years old; can I stay at Gartmore House without a parent/guardian?
No, if you are under the age of 18 you will require a parent or guardian to accompany you.
