About The Course
Online watercolour courses are fine but nothing beats in-person teaching and the gentle hubbub of a busy studio.
Suitable for all, a watercolour course at Gartmore House gives you the chance to either learn from scratch or develop your skills in relaxed company and comfortable surroundings. You can draw inspiration from the beautiful natural setting or the even the historic house around you on this relaxing 5-night break.
Connect with like minded people, immense yourself in all things arty, and let Gartmore House take the stress out of finding the right watercolour course for you.
Over the course of the week you will focus on composition, tonal range and colour mixing, and use a sketchbook for recording and practice, learning at a pace that feels right for you. You’ll also learn about associated techniques, such as line & wash, and outdoor sketching. There will be a wide array of projected images, reference books, photo references, still lifes and outdoor subjects both natural and architectural to work from, also your own photos if you wish to bring them.
Although you will often be painting indoors, weather permitting there my be the chance to work outside – sketching and gathering materials for work.
Course sizes are small to allow tutor Steve Bretel to give you personalised instruction based upon your level of experience. Both the historic house itself, and the extensive grounds provide endless possibilities for creativity, and our spacious indoor studios are well equipped, bright and comfortable.

Food & Accommodation
Full board catering and 5-nights accommodation are included when you book.
Complimentary transfers are included when you book - subject to certain conditions.*
* Transfers from Stirling train station are available on the arrival and departure days (pick-up from the station at 15:30, departs Gartmore House at 10:00). Transfers from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airports are available at an additional cost.

All of our craft or activity holidays run for 5-nights from Sunday to Friday and start from £979 per person.
The above is based on single occupancy. A £100 per person discount is applied for art, craft and activity guests on a shared occupancy basis.

If you’re coming on one of our holidays and would like to bring a friend, partner, or member of your family, then we have you (and them!) covered. Accompanying guests will enjoy full board catering and shared accommodation with you. We also have a full programme of day trips and activities on offer for them. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF BOOKING
To confirm your holiday:
A non-refundable 25% deposit is required to secure your booking.
Payment of your holiday:
The balance of your payment must be received no later than 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement of your holiday. In the case of non-payment, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and any cancellation fees will apply.
If you cancel your booking:
All deposits are non-refundable. Should you need to cancel your booking up to 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement date, we will refund any monies paid, less your deposit. If you cancel less than 3 months (90 days) prior to the commencement date, no refund will be given.
We do advise you to take out holiday insurance for this reason.
Check in is from 4pm where you will receive a warm welcome from our team.
Once you are unpacked and settled, we invite you to enjoy some tea or coffee and home baking in the lounge where you can relax after your journey.
If you have never been on a holiday like this before, we understand how anxious you may be. That’s why, come 6pm, everyone will gather in the lounge for the Welcome Talk and Meet & Greet, giving you the chance to meet both your fellow guests and your tutor before the start of the course on Monday. Your tutor will talk you through what to expect from the week, discuss what you would like to achieve during your stay, and answer any questions you may have.
From there, dinner is served at 6:30pm in the downstairs dining room.
Monday to Thursday
Throughout the week, tuition runs from 10am to 4pm with regular breaks for tea and coffee so you can relax and have a natter with your fellow guests about everything you’ve been up to so far.
All your meals are served in the dining room.
Evening tea and coffee is available in the lounge at 9pm.
Check out by 10am
All participants will be provide with materials inluding boards, paper and brushes, but feel free to bring along your favourite materials if preferred.

Your Course Tutor: Steve Bretel
Steve Bretel, is a fine art painter, maker and enthusiastic educator. Following his studies at art school in Wales, then a career in London as a commercial artist, Steve moved north to pursue his love for creative adventure painting in the mountains, forests, villages and coastal towns of Scotland, where he is now based. He has also worked in outdoor and community arts education, greenwood crafting, and is a qualified mountain leader and musician.
Steve has taught creative classes for nearly 20 years, and believes that understanding the needs of the learner is fundamental, and the key to success. His passion lies in developing the creative confidence and abilities of each person through progressing their style at a pace that suits them, and passing on skills through a blend of demonstrations, group and individual instruction and positive feedback.
He is a past member of the Society of Industrial Artists & Designers, and holds a BA in Visual Communication. He exhibits regularly through galleries and open studio events in the UK, and has work in collections in the UK and other countries. When not working on location, he is based at his Fife home studio, and from his workspace at The Steeple in Newburgh, run by the WASPS arts organisation. He is currently Artist in Residence at Rahoy Hills nature reserve, Morvern.

What do I need to bring on my art, craft and activity break?
Your required kit list for your specific break is shown on each course’s webpage. However, should you have any queries, then please feel free to contact us.
What is the art, craft and activity holiday booking terms and conditions?
To secure your booking, a non-refundable £100 per person deposit is required. Full payment is due 6 weeks prior to arrival. For holidays booked within 6 weeks of the arrival date, full payment is required at time of booking.
Holidays are subject to availability and subject to change. There is a minimum number of guests required to run each course. If a course is cancelled due to low numbers, you may transfer any monies paid to an alternative date or a full refund will be issued.
If you cancel a booking, your £100 deposit is non-refundable. The rest of your payment will be refunded if you cancel no later than 6 weeks prior to arrival.
What time do your transfer services for the art, craft & activity holidays operate?
We offer a complimentary transfer services to and from Stirling train station. Collection is at 3:30pm from the station on the day of arrival, and our drop-off service departs from Gartmore House at 9:15am (5 and 6-night holidays) or 4pm (2-night holidays) on the day of departure.
The closest airports to us are Glasgow and Edinburgh airports. If you require a transfer to and/or from either airport, please select this option at the time of booking. Transfers to/from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are available at an additional cost. After booking your flights, please update your Customer Portal with the time you wish to be collected from the airport on the day of arrival and the time of collection at Gartmore House, returning to the airport, on the day of departure. Please allow 60 minutes for your transfer between Gartmore House and Glasgow Airport, or 90 minutes for your transfer between Gartmore House and Edinburgh Airport.
Can I bring a partner/friend to stay with me while I am on an art, craft or activity break?

Are the bedrooms en-suite?
We have 23 en-suite bedrooms, comprising a mix of single, twin, double and family rooms, located on the first and second floor of the house. There are also three further bedrooms which share a bathroom. All guests are allocated an en-suite room unless you request otherwise.
Do you have accessible bedrooms?
We have one dedicated accessible bedroom. This bedroom benefits from an en-suite bathroom with assistance rails, grab bars and a ‘roll-in’ shower. Additionally, we have a number of other bedrooms that have a shower cubicle which may fit your needs. All other bedrooms feature a bath with an overhead shower. All floors of the house are accessible by lift.
What facilities are there in the bedrooms?
All bedrooms have tea and coffee making facilities, a hairdryer, bath towels and complimentary travel toiletries. Whilst there are no TVs in the bedrooms there is a TV in the Oak Room.
Do all the bedrooms have a good view?
The more spacious, Hobby Haven bedrooms have panoramic views looking across Flander’s Moss towards Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. All other bedrooms have a side or rear view of our grounds.
What time is check in/check out?
Check-in is from 4pm, and check-out is 10am.
There will always be somebody on duty to check you in, whether it is the receptionist or the night porter. If you are going to be very late, we would appreciate you letting us know in advance where possible.
Is there WiFi?
Complimentary fibre internet is available for all guests and is accessible in our public areas on the ground floor and library on the lower ground floor. There is no WiFi access in the bedrooms.

Do you have car parking facilities?
Free on-site parking is available for all guests throughout the duration of your stay. All cars are parked at owners’ risk.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
We are able to cater for a wide range of dietaries and allergens. Please notify us of any requirements at the time of booking.
Can I stay at Gartmore House on a bed and breakfast basis?
Whilst our calendar is filled with art, craft and activity holidays we do occassionally have gaps which we open to bed & breakfast guests.
We welcome solo travellers, couples and friends to stay at Gartmore House on a B&B basis. Full payment is required at the time of a B&B booking. Direct bookings have a 72-hour cancellation policy.

What should I do if I have lost or left something in my room?
Send us an email or call if you think you have left something in your room, and we will do our best to find it and return it to you. However, we ask you to please reimburse us for the postage fee.
Can I bring my dog?
We are a dog friendly house. Dogs are not permitted in the public or dining areas and must be kept in your bedroom. Whilst in the ground of Gartmore Estate, all dogs must be kept on a lead. We charge a fee of £30 per dog. This fee does not apply to guide dogs or assistance dogs.
Where is the nearest shop?
Gartmore village has a small community owned shop that is a 10-minute walk away. For a bigger supermarket, there is a Co-operative in the village of Aberfoyle, situated two miles from Gartmore House.
I am under 18 years old; can I stay at Gartmore House without a parent/guardian?
No, if you are under the age of 18 you will require a parent or guardian to accompany you.
